Measure 20-114 -- CAUTION... Buzzwords Ahead

KVAL--

"Stop Meth - Invest in Kids" [BUZZWORD ALERT] for measure 20-114, that will increase funding for law enforcement in Lane County, and help local social service agencies. I thought the public safety measure was just for... public safety. Silly me
" community leaders are hoping the Lane County public safety measure 20-114 will help take some of the pressure off local nonprofit. "

" Campaign organizers say nonprofit agencies that deal with the fallout from meth [BUZZWORD ALERT] are maxed out. They say that the public safety income tax levy would help ease the burden "

here we go again...
they give us a song and dance that they need money for public safety and law enforcement, how they have had to cut law-enforcement services due to lack of funding... and already, there are different agencies with their hands out ready to take their perceived share of the money.

So if the public safety tax passes, just what percentage of the money will law-enforcement actually receive from the tax.

For those who have lived in Eugene area for some time will remember the Hult Center incident with the sheriff's levy... where the people voted in favor of the sheriff's levy, and the Sheriff's Department only receive 10% of the funds.

Yea Robins back. I thought it was crappy the way they snuck the Hult Center and the Library into the parks department so that if you wanted to support the parks you had to also donate to the Hult and Library.
I work for the county and I'm voting against the measure because I think that public safety is the number one priority for the county and should be fully funded first. By giving them this money they will never have to prioritize their budget. Also I think it is unfair to ask some citizens to pay for it and others not to. Since PERS is not taxable by law then they should not have even submitted this piece of crap.

THE SUPPORTERS OF MEASURE 20-114 CLAIM THAT SOME 96 BEDS IN THE LANE COUNTY JAIL ARE UNUSED BECAUSE OF LACK OF FUNDING. WHAT THESE PEOPLE DON'T TELL US, THE VOTERS, IS THAT HUNDRES OF BEDS, YES HUNDREDS, ARE BEING USED FOR FEDERAL OFFENDERS/ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AND TO INCARCIRATE OTHER OFFENDERS SUCH AS: DUII, DWS,VARIOUS OTHER TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS (NOBODY PAYS FINES ANYMORE, THEY JUST GET JAIL TIME) ILLEGAL USE OF PARKS-LIKE WALKING A DOG, PETTY SHOPLIFTERS OR PETTY LARCENY, PRIVATE/PUBLIC INDECENCY, AND OTHER NON-VIOLENT CRIMES. SIMPLY THE LANE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY, WHO IS THE "CEO" OF THIS MEASURE, AND THE SHERIFF HAVE DONE THEIR BEST IN RECENT YEARS TO MAKE SURE THE REAL CRIMINALS WALK OUR STREETS AT NIGHT - TO DO WHAT THEY DO BEST. WHAT BETTER WAY TO JUSTIFY A COUNTY INCOME TAX. JUST LIKE THE CRIMINALS, THOSE WHO OFFEND US THE MOST, MAINLY THE D.A AND SHERIFF, GO UNPUNISHED, THEY WILL BE REWARDED FOR THEIR FAILURES AT TAXPAYERS EXPENSE IF THIS MEASURE PASSES.

The name of this measure is "Lane County Charter Amendment to Limit Income Tax Measure 20-114." This is a deliberate attempt to put a positive spin on a VERY negative measure. I am adamantly opposed to using county agencies as a "pass-through" to the private sector. It is an incredibly inefficient way of utilizing tax dollars. The County staff will expend a huge percentage of each dollar just administering the handouts - money that should directly benefit citizens of the County who need assistance. A very bad system indeed. Not to mention the fact that $250,000 in tax dollars is being expended in the effort to get this amendment to pass. That’s a couple of public safety officers right there.

In your post (excerpted below) you say:

[For those who have lived in Eugene area for some time will remember the Hult Center incident with the sheriff's levy... where the people voted in favor of the sheriff's levy, and the Sheriff's Department only receive 10% of the funds. ]

What and when are you talking about? What has the Hult Center -- a part of the City of Eugene -- got to do with the Sheriff's office -- a part of the county? Please tell me this story. I've been here a long time and yet I haven't any idea what you are talking about.

suggest if you want to balance the county budget you should fire half the public employees and make the other half work eight hours a day.
