Feds to sue Philadelphia over [Spanish-speaking] voting rights

AP Associated Press --

The US Department of Justice Friday sued the city of Philadelphia claiming it violated the rights of Spanish-speaking voters when the city failed to provide language assistance at the polls in recent elections, which prevented Spanish-speaking voters from receiving assistance from people of their choice.
I think what is interesting is that they seem to forget one small little detail that you have to be a citizen to vote and to be a citizen, you must be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage in the English language.
so where is the problem?

I hope Philadelphia fights this. It is not the responsibility of government to assist anyone's language deficiencies. I really get mad when society keeps putting parental attributes on government!

Citizen to vote? Are you kidding me? I think that went out with such antiquated concepts as "legal alien" , "establish justice", and "...secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity...".

Right on Robin. In order to exercise your rights and priveleges as a citizen, you are required to read, write and speak English. Voting doesn't require a lot of reading...all you need to know is the name of the person you want to vote for. Even illiterate people can recognize names, and they are the same in almost any language.

Why are they only concerned about the spanish speaking? What about the Russian, Chines, German and all the other languages? If you only offer one other language than English, that is racist and prejudice. It is far from "diversity". If you only offer English, it is because that is the language of the country.
The Feds need to be "bitch slapped" until they realize it is AMERICANS that pay their wages.

Most citizens that speak other languages also speak English - better than I do in some cases. Our Mexican population is the only one asking for special rights, ones that they do not want to earn. Our government will never change as long as party politics are strong. They need to start being Americans instead of Dems or Reps.OR maybe they don't understand English either!
