Senate votes to double employer fines for hiring illegal immigrants

KVA L.--

The Senate has voted to tack on an amendment that would fine employers of the $20,000 for EACH illegal immigrant a higher.

The process involves checking Social Security numbers and the status of all new hires through Homeland security once it gets funding to expand its electronic screening system.

Opponents say the verification system is still years away from implementation, however, Illinois Democrat Barack Obama calls it "probably the single most important" step to reduce the flow of undocumented workers.
A vote on the full immigration bill it is expected later in the week.

'Course, that won't help much if the legislation goes through that exempts employers from penalties due to past hiring illegals. Check out my post from yesterday.

when you're talking about cheap labor, I'm sure they'll find a way to get around the law.

I found out how they get 'around' laws - they write them the way they want. Take for example the American with Disabilities Act. It DOES NOT apply to employers with fewer than 15 employees. Do you have any idea how many businesses that gives free reign to for discrimination? A LOT! They didn't get around a law, they just know how to manipulate the small print.

Laura, You are right about the number of small businesses in the U.S. I read that something like 90% of all U.S. businesses employ less than 15 people. The ADA should include those businesses or be written off the books entirely. And we know how soon that will happen.
