Weyerhaeuser Co. announced that it will permanently close to manufacturing operations in Oregon... a plywood mill in Springfield, and a veneer plant in Coburg -- effective immediately.
“Weyerhaeuser made the difficult decision after a strategic review of the company’s veneer business,” Cathy Slater, vice president of veneer technologies said. “There’s a shrinking demand for plywood panels because of the decline in housing starts and the increase availability of alternative products. After careful consideration of all the options, a decision was made to close the two facilities.”
The Springfield mill employs 86 people, 42 in Coburg.

More of that rebounding economy we keep hearing about. When Bush tells how many new jobs were created, he never mentions how many were abolished. I am surprised that wood products has held on as long as it has. This is another reason to work for yourself instead of a large corp. Spend 25 years of dedication and get a pink slip at Christmas. Ain't it special?
and Ted-Tax and Gouge me thinks so too
It sounds like Governor TED K is flip floppy to me here is your recent article
The economy is great... Kulongoski already wants 20% more
You can bet that the environmental wackos are jumping for Joy (or whomever is their mainest squeeze nowadays, boy or girl or both) over this closure. They are getting their way again.
Ah yes it reminds me of the Beatles:
"Let me tell you how it will be;
There's one for you, nineteen for me...
Should five per cent appear too small,
Be thankful I don't take it all...
(if you drive a car, car;) - I’ll tax the street;
(if you try to sit, sit;) - I’ll tax your seat;
(if you get too cold, cold;) - I’ll tax the heat;
(if you take a walk, walk;) - I'll tax your feet...
you're working for no one but me.
Taxman!"
that's what ol sleepy Ted has done in the past, and in my opinion, people fell for the soundbites and name recognition and put him right back into office.
and don't forget...
LTD tax if you're self-employed
somebody has to pay for those five $900,000 buses
This is much more of a federal government issue than a state issue due to the cut off of timber supply.
Federal, state or city makes no diff.....it is a tax payer issue. You would think people learned a lesson from re-electing GW. but NO-O-O-O, we need Ted to remind us of our mistakes. Can't wait to see what he does next as it always makes me go Hmmmm?!
