Boston Governor OKs detention of the legal immigrants by state police

KEZI--

Boston Governor Mitt Romney, who is considering a campaign for Republican presidential nominee in 2008, signed an agreement with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) Wednesday that allows Massachusetts State police troopers to detain illegal aliens that they encounter during the course of their normal duties.

The first group of 30 troopers drawn from the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Squad, the Criminal Investigation Section, the Anti-Gang Unit, the Drug Enforcement Unit and the Community Action Team will receive five weeks a specialized training next year paid for by the federal government.

The life of the new policy may have a limited life because Romney’s term ends January 4, and his successor, Democrat Deval Patrick, opposes placing any additional burden on the troopers, calling the policy a mistake.

It's unwise given all the other demands on the state police to ask them to take on the added responsibility of enforcing federal immigration laws," the governor-elect said Wednesday night in Springfield. "I don't think it's much more than a political ploy to bring them in." He said he's investigating what power he might have to nullify the agreement.

how can you think of it as being at burden when you're talking about national security?

I believe this law is intended to allow the troopers to do something about illegals when they encounter them it does NOT allow them to be immigration agents. Since it is in the normal course of their duty, it should not be a burden. Besides, we are talking national security here!
I hope other states follow this trend as it unties their hands.

WOW - a state that will allow law enforcement to enforce the law! Sure wish Oregon had a Governor with a backbone.

I'd be in favor of giving police a bonus for every illegal they round up and hand over to ICE - helps promote and encourage the fine people that protect our society!

It bothers me that the cities are not allowed to create laws to protect themselves but the states can. What is up with that?
Maybe there is another loop hole we are not aware of. Has anyone told Sid?

it bothers me that we're so concerned about terrorism, we've increased security on airplanes and added marshals on trains, etc. however, when it comes down to the security of our borders, the protection of the citizens of the United States and the fact that it is common practice to steal Social Security cards without risk of penalty, it is frustrating that our governments are turning a blind eye to it.

I have to agree with Bill O'Reilly on this one.

"is not like we don't have a method for people to come into this country legally, so why are we giving these people drivers licenses that do come into the country illegally..."
