Medicaid benefits require proof of citizenship or legal immigration status took effect Friday

Department of Human Services--

August 30, 2006 -- state workers will begin asking people applying or reapplying for most Medicaid benefits to provide evidence of citizenship or legal immigration status in compliance with a new federal law aimed at keeping in eligible non-citizens off Medicaid rolls.
People who are receiving Medicare or supplemental insurance income benefits are exempted from the requirement because their citizenship has already been documented. Legal residents who are not citizens will continue to provide appropriate documents from the US citizenship and immigration services.

Approximately 500,000 people receive Medicaid health-care in Oregon. Federal estimates put the number of ineligible non-citizens receiving Medicaid benefit in Oregon up to 350.

DHS will assist Oregon born applicants by checking the agency's database for certificates. People born in other states, DHS will provide details on how to order birth certificate and, in specific hardship cases, will pay the cost of obtaining the document.

You can bet that Teddy the K and his Obedient Toady, Billy Bradbury, will be protesting this action by the Medicaid people. And those screwball judges in Salem and in Michigan will be declaring it "unconstitutional". And the AmINOCLU will be inserting their ugly noses into this one, too.

As Yogi Berra said, "It ain't over till it's over". And, as Karen Carpenter sang, "It's only just begun--".

When we presented "Proof of Citizenship" requirement for FIRST TIME ONLY Oregon voters, Billy Bradbury called it too "onerous", in '01, '03, & '05 sessions.

HB2583 did pass the house in '05.

The only way to defeat this liberal attack on common sense issues is to elect a Conservative Secretary of State in '08.
(and I do not mean Karen Minnis, Bruce Starr,etc...)

I'll never forget listening to Bradbury on a PBS interview saying that he was unaware of any Oregon drivers license fraud about a month after that examining place in Portland was charged with issuing about 80,000 suspicious licenses. It was sickening to hear him laugh of the question as though it was unthinkable.
If illegals are given the vote, America as we know it is lost. Amnesty=death to America.

Just to be fair and honest, this IS being implemented by a direct executive order of the governor and the head of DHS. I do believe the governor is playing politics by "supporting" this before the election, however. And that the Supreme Court might throw it out is simply one more reason why we need to elect justices like Jack Roberts.

Anon 8:27am: That this is a directive from Teddy the K is nothing more that him playing politics. Had this not been an election year for him, it would never have been implemented, nor even discussed.

I read recently that the difference between a politician and a statesman is that a politician looks forward to the next election, while a statesman looks forward to the next generation. Teddy the K is no statesman.

And why did we need a law for this? Isn't it already a requirement? I read an article recently that a guy in California repeatedly applied (at the same branch of DMV) for a drivers license or ID card in a different outfit with a different name and ended up with 82 pieces of ID. Someone should lose their job over that!
