defending illegal aliens,

I wish somebody could explain it to me

I am a college student, and every time I bring up the issue about illegal aliens, they make me out to be the bad guy with the problem.

Here's the part that I don't get...

they are here illegally
they are not supposed to be here
they are breaking our laws
we are changing our policies to accommodate the lawbreakers
we are having to learn a different language because we are being overpopulated by people that do not belong here.
preference for jobs are now given to Spanish or bilingual speaking people including the State of Oregon giving a 5% bonus if you speak Spanish.

I'm being serious and sincere when I ask if somebody could please explain to me why I should be okay with this.

OK, let me try to explain it to you.

they are here illegally

The best way to stem the flow of illegals is to penalize the people who readily employ them. Drop heavy fines on a few employers and the rest will scrutinize the people they hire.

But we don't do that because it will hurt farmer's pocketbooks.

they are not supposed to be here.

If they couldn't get hired, they wouldn't come.

they are breaking our laws

The businesses that hire them are breaking our laws, yet you don't seem at all concerned about that.

we are changing our policies to accommodate the lawbreakers

Not necessarily. A lot of the Spanish speakers in this country are US citizens or have green cards.

we are having to learn a different language because we are being overpopulated by people that do not belong here.

It's funny that you consider learning a new language to be a bad thing. Most students in other countries speak at least 2 languages, sometimes more.

preference for jobs are now given to Spanish or bilingual speaking people including the State of Oregon giving a 5% bonus if you speak Spanish.

It makes sense to hire people who are fluent in more than one language -- they can comunicate with more people.

It would be like complaining that people with college degrees shouldn't be paid more than folks with high school degrees. The more skills you possess, the more valuable you are to the workforce.

Trey, you logic is flawed as always. You constantly blame bussinesses for the acts of individuals, you suggest we adopt the norms of other countries, and the reason that the state hires so many spanish speakers is because they serve so many illegal aliens.

If you are a US citizen then a)you were born here and you should be able to speak English just fine by 5th grade or b)you took the naturalization test IN ENGLISH so you speak it just fine.

Illegal is illegla is illegal. That's it.

I agree with Daniel, illegal is illegal, is illegal.

I agree however, if we enforce the laws that are in place for example employers are required to file the INS I-9 which requires you to show that you have the "right to work in the United States", it would be a good place to start.

... "it is funny that you consider learning a new language to be a bad thing..." no I do not consider it to be a bad thing, I would just like to have a choice of which language that I would "prefer" to learn.

Speaking of, at Lane community college, the Spanish that they teach is not the Spanish that they use in this area. I think that is rather odd

State of Oregon giving a 5% bonus if you speak English. the chances are that the state would not have to do this if people were here "legally".

The last time that I checked the immigration laws,INA 316
"Applicants for naturalization must be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage in the English language"

So again, I am still confused why there are so many people that defend people that are in violation of federal law.

Say what? If a business goes out of its way to hire people they KNOW are here illegally, why shouldn't they be punished? It's well documented that many such companies actively recruit illegals in open defiance to our laws.

The INS might swoop in and deport a bunch of illegal workers. The workers pay the price, but not the employer who recruited them. Once the INS leaves, the company recruits some more.

Why, in your book Daniel, should the workers bear the brunt of the law and not the employer as well?

If you are a US citizen then a)you were born here and you should be able to speak English just fine by 5th grade or b)you took the naturalization test IN ENGLISH so you speak it just fine.

Have you ever seen some of these citizen swearing ins? I have. Many of the new citizens can mouth all the words they need to, but it's obvious they aren't fluent. They leave the location speaking in their mother tongue.

no I do not consider it to be a bad thing, I would just like to have a choice of which language that I would "prefer" to learn.

You want to pick an arbitrary language? It makes sense to learn languages spoken in your area. That's why the Swiss learn German, French and English, but not Japanese.

I agree, this is very true, unless you also plan to visit or work in another country in the future and wish to learn their language.
