Coos Bay will be the most important area--

The people of the bay area tend to be conservative in nature: pro-life, pro-gun, and most of all, pro-logging. But politically, they are majority democRat, due to the power of the labor unions in the timber industry. I believe that a Republican candidate who can appeal to the labor movement in Coos County can push them over into the red. Atkinson could be that candidate: he has family in the area, good connections in timber, and is more labor-friendly than other Republicans.

Oregon is very close to a 50-50 red/blue state. A small shift in one voting bloc can tip the scales. If Atkinson is able to shift Coos County from democRat to Republican, he is the next governor.
