Day Labors - the underground economy

Detroit news

An item to complement Daniels wonderful report about last weekend's carousel of information {link} was an issue regarding day labor pickup places.

I came across this interesting little article that I thought I would share.
of the 10.3 million unauthorized migrants estimated by the Pew Hispanic Center who live in the United States, 6.8 million of them make up about 4.6 of the nation's workforce.

While it is traditionally common to think of illegal aliens only working in the fields, according to the Pew Hispanic Center, 26% work in landscaping and 27% are drywall installers. They [Pew Hispanic Center] estimate that more than one of every four or drywall installers and landscape workers are illegal.
illegal immigrants make far less than the rest of the population. Their average family income of $27,400 is more than 40% below the legal immigrant or native family income of about $47,700 the Pew Hispanic Center found.

It is a pretty long article, and I recommend it for reading.

Also be sure to check out http://danielisright.blogspot.com/ for pictures and other information about last weekend's event

Good post.

There is a fallacy that these illegals are taking jobs Americans don't want. Now if there were the case why is it that so many of our banks are making home loans to illegal aliens? I guess there must be good money in pick'n berrys?

You should have seen some of the rides they have. Freakin' amazing. That bit of time wandering around the Cornelius event was really an eye-opener.

I can't afford a tricked Mustang, or many of the other rides I saw pull into the lot. Pulling in, I add, to sign up for free health care and other benefits.

of course not, if you're working a minimum-wage job (legally) chances are between federal, state and local taxes you are paying anywhere from 28% and up.

If you're working the underground economy, and not pay those taxes, and you can afford to buy toys.

and since you're here illegally anyways, what's one more federal violation to worry about?

No wonder the middle class is gone. As a legal hardworking citizen of this country I don't make $27,000 a year! Oh, yeah, I forgot, our Government doesn't count your net, they count your gross. The only thing gross about it is I don't get it all.
It is also very upsetting to find out that the illegals can receive services our taxes pay for. Maybe we should send their home country a bill for the services we have been providing.
