Lane County -- two proposed budgets will be reviewed

Lane County news release--

Two proposed budgets will be reviewed beginning this Thursday, with the topic being the financial uncertainty from a loss of federal "payments to counties" funding which expired September 2006

The proposed budgets that were developed for consideration consider the "best case" and the "worst-case" scenarios if federal funding is lost

Scenario #1 reflects about $3 million in reductions and assumes federal funding continues.

Scenario #2 reflects about $20 million in reductions and cuts to general fund services, and $20 million in reduction to the road fund.

Additionally, scenario #2 does not include a replacement revenue source and proposes reductions or cuts to 46 different services and programs to include senior and disable services, Pathways residential drug treatment program for boys, extension services, veteran services, and supervision of misdemeanor domestic violence offenders, etc.
"With regard to general fund programs in public safety and public health, Lane County will significantly reduce its services below minimally adequate levels," County Administrator Bill Van Vactor said of Budget No. 2.

The budget meeting, named "Redefining Lane County in a Post-Timber Revenue World" begins at 6:15 p.m., Thursday, April 26 at Harris Hall, 125 E. 8th Ave Eugene

I do not see either as an option. Maybe a recall IS a good thing because I do not believe the commishs are doing their job. If this problem was obvious for 6 years and nothing was done - someone needs to lose their job.
Fundraising should have been going on for the past 6 years in order to keep services going. I would assume that they do not want people to continue recieving help.

I agree with Laura. Why did they wait until the last minute?

So true. I even went back to the November ballot when the county income tax was first proposed and didn't find one reference to the federal money being in doubt. To me this shows an extreme lack of planning and forethought and honesty on the part of the commissioners. Recall now.

Hold their feet to the fire!

When we had budget problems in Clatsop county the first thing they cut was jail/sheriff's deputies.

Get some creep in your neighborhood, call the SO and listen to them tell you they don't have anybody to respond.

Leadership. Meh.

If everyone is in this together, I suggest the 'leaders' (elected officials) need to tighten their belts as well and take a pay cut. Wouldn't hurt them to buy a $25 tie instead of a $200 one.
