should big box stores be forced to pay higher than minimum wage?

The New York Times--

Chicago city Council passed a groundbreaking ordinance yesterday requiring the big box stores like Wal-Mart and Home Depot to pay a minimum wage of $10 an hour by 2010 along with at least three dollars an hour worth the benefits.
" The ordinance, imposing the requirement on stores that occupy more than 90,000 square feet and are part of companies grossing more than $1 billion annually, would be the first in the country to single out large retailers for wage rules. "

the measure passed by a vote of 35-14 after four hours of intense speeches and debates. In Illinois retailers group said it would challenge than the measure in court and Mayor Richard Daley, who said earlier that the ordinance could impede growth and tax revenues and gave no indication whether he would veto the ordinance.

I'm glad they have to up the ante, however where wally world is concerned they already give their employees benefits that total an extra $3 an hour. I worked for them almost 10 years ago. They give profit sharing and an IRA along with a few other options. Probably won't hurt them as bad as it sounds. BUmmer! They need to take a bite!

Why should the "big box" stores have to pay a higher minumum wage than other smaller stores?
That is reverse discrimination in it's ugliest form. And the idea that they should pay more "because they can afford to" is just plain stupid.

Who would decide which companies would pay the inflated minimum wage? What would be the basis for their higher wage?

This sounds like the makings of another bureaucracy, egged on by liberals who can't stand the idea of some multi-national corportation making more money than the Mom-and-Pop convenience store down the street.
