Senate Votes in English As National Language

Washington Post--

After an emotional debate fraught with symbolism, the Senate yesterday voted to make English the "national language" of the United States, declaring that no one has a right to federal communications or services in a language other than English except for those already guaranteed by law. which also was a requirement of the FCC act of 1934
The measure, approved 63 to 34, directs the government to "preserve and enhance" the role of English, without altering current laws that require some government documents and services be provided in other languages. Opponents, however, said it could negate executive orders, regulations, civil service guidances and other multilingual ordinances not officially sanctioned by acts of Congress.

But pro-immigration groups and some Democrats said the amendment would obliterate executive orders issued by President Bill Clinton that mandated multilingual services and communications in a variety of federal agencies, and could undermine court orders, agency regulations, civil service guidances, and state and local ordinances that call for multilingual services.
But immigrants-rights groups say their support is teetering. "This is devastating," said Raul Gonzalez, legislative director of the National Council of La Raza, after the English-language vote. "For us, this is a tough issue to bring back to the community."

Robin, I would love to see the record of the individual votes of the Senators. How did 'our' Senators vote?

I thought English WAS our National Language. Wonder if we need a vote to decide if we are still called Americans.

Why shuld English not be our official national language? The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, Linclon's Gettysburg Address and his Emancipation Proclamation, the Federalist Papers, and all our other governmental documents are written in English, NOT MexSpanish.

And who really cares what Gonzales says about this proosal being "devestating" to the Communities. The illegal aliens are not members of what I deem to be my community.

They are here illegally and uninvited and need to go back to wherever they came from immediately.

Also, one quick question (with tongue-in-cheek): When will Mexico apply for statehood, and when they do, how will Smith, Wyden, Osama Mama Murray, and Cantwell vote? I think we all know the answer to the last part of the question.
