“THE CHRISTMAS CROSS AT PIONEER SQUARE”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 1, 2005
“THE CHRISTMAS CROSS AT PIONEER SQUARE”

Everyone is invited to join us as we begin a new tradition at Pioneer Square, “The Christmas Cross” sponsored by The Portland Area Christian Churches and the Lars Larson Show of radio station 750 KXL. When asked about the display Larson said, “we’re putting the Cross in the Square to remind people of the real reason for the season. Letting local government re-define the ‘Christmas Tree’ as a ‘Holiday Tree’ is an insult not only to Christians everywhere, but to other religions as well. You shouldn’t have to hire a lawyer in order to say ‘Merry Christmas.’”

The Cross will be on display in the Square from the morning of December 19th and available for viewing through Christmas Eve, December 24th 2005. The Lars Larson Show can be heard Monday through Friday from 11am to 2pm in Portland on Newsradio 750 KXL and throughout Oregon, Southwest Washington and parts of Idaho on 17 affiliate stations via the Radio Northwest Network.

Sorry. I think Lars should put up a nativity scene. I'm sure the intent was good, but Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ.

agreed, but I think that he is trying to make a point that cannot be mistaken for anything else.I also get the feeling that there is more then meets the eye here.

i.e. I will bet that he is hoping that somebody will make a big issue over it where it could be challenged in court, or at the very least, talk about the reaction on his local and national shows.

Which do you find more offensive: wishing someone a "Happy Holiday" or using a religious symbol to make a political statement?

Perhaps even more offensive is using sacred symbols to increase your ratings.

I want to put up my own crucifix, too!

I want to put up one with a modified Tickle-Me-Elmo doll crucified on it, amplified and wire-powered and sound-activated, so everyone can watch Elmo twitch and giggle maniacally to celebrate the TRUE spirit of Christmas -- shopping.

You Xtians have serious issues. You want to remind people of the true spirit and reason for the season, why not stage a Saturnalia celebation?

You didn't invent the effing holiday, wankers.

Dear Robin,

Thank you for not replying to that last email.

You are showing the true spirit of Christms: kindness! Without retaliation. Without judgement. Without name-calling.
This spirit overtakes almost every person who has ever celebrated Christmas, whether or not they associate it with gift giving and shopping or with the birth of Christ. The spirit of giving runs rampant. People hear the Salvation Army Band and smile. Dozens of Santa's running around on Burnside made me smile today! Evergreen branches and red ribbons brighten up our gray winter days. People forget some of their troubles for a little while.

Although I do believe that Lars Larson and others are trying very hard to start a war over Christmas just for ratings sake - and they may be succeeding, I will not support any efforts to remove anyone's right to celebrate Christmas however they want, or, (might as well keep going,) to marry anyone they want, or to become a priest regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.

Power to the people.

I seriously wonder how the people who are exploiting this issue can sleep at night.

We CAN all live together. The cross in Pioneer square, your spouse, and my priest will never dictate the way I choose to live my life.

Merry Christmas.

Happy Kwanza
Happy Solstice
Happy Saturnalia
Happy New Year
Happy Saturday!
